  • Career Paths Beyond Sr. Developer

"What will be your job title in the year before your retirement?" This is a question that most software developers struggle with, in large part because there haven't been generations of engineers before us that have matured through the I.T. workforce, and on to retirement. What career paths will we follow to remain technical while still being challenged? What career paths will lead us into management and leadership?

In this talk Jim will show some traditional career paths in IT, as well as visions on how the software development workplace will mature over the next several decades. Additionally, Jim will talk about what skills and experience will be required for the careers beyond Sr. Developer.

  • Managing Millennials

Millennials are the most connected, most can-do, and arguably the most capable generation to meet the workforce since the depression-era generation of the 20s and 30s. However, Generation Y also has a different set of values, motivators, and perspectives than their Generation X and Baby Boomer predecessors. While managing the millennial persona may produce endless frustrations for their managers, organizations who learn how to equip this workforce with the techniques and leadership they need will reap the benefits of the amazing work these talented employees will produce.

In this talk Jim will touch on both the frustrating and the fantastic characteristics of millennial employees, and how these traits are often derived from the same generational differences. Jim will provide tips and techniques for managers to adjust their managerial practices to best tap into the drive and ambition of this growing workforce.
